The History of Glamping Pods

So you’ve heard about this new “glamping” trend, but you know the origin of these camping domes? Many people think they are a recent trend for those who prefer a glamorous camping experience. It’s true that the word itself is a relatively new term, however, there is much more behind it all! Most of us have heard of this new travel trend, but what is glamping? It's the ultimate outdoor experience! It means that instead of a night on the ground in a sleeping bag, you can sleep on a beautiful king-sized bed. Glamping is the combination of the words "glamour" and "camping", and although the term has only been around since 2005, it dates back over a thousand years. The name “glamping” was actually added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016!

Throughout history, we have seen many different styles of camping/living structures such as the tipi or yurt. The 16th century is when we see the first true glamorous camping setups with tents filled with furniture and other lavish items. Around 400 years later in the early 1900s wealthy travelers from Europe and America started to holiday in Africa and go on safaris. They did not want to sacrifice their comfort and luxury, which sparked the glamping domes most similar to what we see today! Glamping eventually spread throughout Europe and North America. It has been increasingly popular, and more accessible, among all groups of people.

Nowadays, glamping pods are furnished with many more luxuries than they had previously, and less fear of a lion breaking in! Our glamping pods are furnished with rugs, lamps, and all of the usual suspects when it comes to kitchen and bathroom essentials. One of the most luxurious things about Moonlit Canopy is the hot tub on every patio! We truly believe that after a stay with us, you won’t want to travel any other way!
